Former 49ers launch Golden Heart race to help ailing ex-teammates

SANTA CLARA — Because so many ex-49ers are ailing, a group of leaders from the team’s dynasty years, including Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott and Keena Turner, helped create a charitable fund last winter to assist players in crisis. On Tuesday morning, the group announced how fans can help, too. Roger Craig, the four-time Pro Bowl running back, will lead the way for runners at the inaugural Golden Heart 4.9K run/walk on Nov. 19 at Levi’s Stadium. Proceeds from the event will provide “support and relief in time of physical, mental and financial crisis” for former 49ers,  the announcement said. Registration fees start at $40 for individuals and $2,500 for teams entering the 49K relay. “This is what Bill

NFL Top 100 on 2017: Players from 3-13 Bears make fun of 1-15 Browns using Tom Brady as an example

The Chicago Bears were the 3rd worst team in the NFL in 2016. They posted a 3-13 record, ahead of only the 1-15 Cleveland Browns and the 2-14 San Francisco 49ers. They were terrible and lost a lot of their offensive talent heading into 2017. The Bears are almost assuredly in the same category of “bad” as the Browns and 49ers. Don’t tell that to Bears EDGE Pernell McPhee or Bears LB Sam Acho. McPhee and Acho joined NFL Network’s Top 100 of 2017 to discuss Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le’Veon Bell and took their punches at the Cleveland Browns. “There’s only two players that can go to Cleveland Browns and still be good,” McPhee said. “Tom Brady,” Acho replied quickly. “Tom Brady,” McPhee agreed. “He

Jeff Garcia on John Lynch, Kyle Shanahan: "I think that it’s a step in the right direction."

Last week I was fortunate enough to get an interview with former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jeff Garcia. The interview was part of a promotion for the new American Flag Football League. The league is holding a Launch Game on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in San Jose. Garcia will be providing color commentary for a stream of it. I went into that interview planning to ask him a lot of the obvious, hoping for another perspective. What actually happened was I wound up asking more about his journey through the NFL, one he wasn’t supposed to even be on. Words cannot describe how fascinating it was to hear him tell that story. But I also did get a chance to ask him about the current state of the 49ers,
