Being an NFL blog, politics tend to get put aside here at Shutdown Corner, and I see no reason for that to change with this post. The question on the table is this: Who would you rather watch football with, John McCain or Barack Obama?
Before you answer, two things: 1) Assume it's a Sunday where absolutely nothing is happening that would require presidential attention, and 2) Really, really, really focus on putting politics aside and just picking a guy to chill with. The answer might be very different from who you think is better qualified to do important presidential things.
Here's the issue: When the 4th quarter rolls around, and your team's got a 3rd and 4 with a game on the line, and you really going to care how the guy you're sitting next to feels about campaign finance? Not me. I wouldn't care if he not only supported gay marriage, but wanted to make it mandatory for every American. I wouldn't care if he wanted o put every one of our nation's adorable little kittens into a giant kitty prison because he suspected them of masterminding the attacks of 9/11.
I just want him to behave appropriately for the football situation at hand. There are good fans and bad fans. You've all watched football with each variety.
At the end of the day, I think they'd both probably be decent choices. I'm sure they're both nice people
My concern with John McCain is that he's a little light in the category of honest football loyalty. He's been caught changing his story between Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, and he's gotta have some Cardinals loyalty mixed in there, too. I couldn't tolerate a guy who had more than one favorite team. If his team lost and he said something like, "Well, at least my Cardinals won," he wouldn't be invited back.
On the other hand, I don't know if I could picture Barack Obama talking a lot of trash. There are times when it's appropriate to get up off the couch and scream, "KILL, KILL, KILL!" There's a time when you want a guy to question whether or not the opposing quarterback actually possesses the appropriate genitalia. I don't know if Obama can bring that kind of heat.
Obama won the national poll by a slim margin, but I'm curious to see what the audience here would think. That poll was conducted among the general public; while we were are probably more hardcore football fans.
