Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson has apparently been hearing about it from the people who don't understand why he's holding out for a better contract from his team. At least, that's the only way the stuff that came out of his Twitter account on Wednesday made any sense.
Johnson started out Wednesday morning with the simple missive, "I can only play the cards that come to me." He then mentioned that he'd "like to thank everyone who have me in their prayers thru my situation, it's much needed."
Then, things took a slightly ugly turn — he first made this request:
Can these fake Titan fans STFU on my timeline I don't have a regular job so don't compare me to you and I can care less if u think I'm greedy
And then, this:
If you was a real fan my tweet would not bother you it only make the fake fans upset
The argument as to what makes up "real" and "fake" fans aside, Johnson is clearly letting the frustration about his contract situation get the better of him, and that's unfortunate. While he's looking for the kind of money most NFL teams would only pay quarterbacks (somewhere in the area of $12 million-$13 million per year, according to some sources), the Titans have countered with the promise that they'll make him the highest-paid running back in the game — which would be appropriate, but not exactly quarterback money.
Johnson's "I don't have a regular job" shot at the Twitterverse may be a response to a common refrain — that professional athletes make a mockery of the plight of the everyday worker when they demand so much more money than most people will ever see in a lifetime. Then again, Johnson's responsible for huge amounts of revenue — he's one of the rare NFL players that people specifically come to see in the ultimate team sport.
What do you think? Is Johnson within his rights to pop off to the populace, or should he keep things quiet until he accepts his best possible contract?
