NFL says investigation uncovered no evidence Derrius Guice was asked inappropriate questions
A day before the NFL draft, the league announced it found no evidence running back Derrius Guice was asked inappropriate questions by a team at the scouting combine.
A statement from league spokesman Brian McCarthy, posted on Twitter by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, summarized the investigation:
“Following reports concerning the interviews of Derrius Guice at the Scouting Combine, the League conducted a thorough investigation which included a formal review and report from every club that interviewed Mr. Guice during the Combine, as well as discussions with Mr. Guice, his agent and others. The investigation did not confirm that any club made the reported inquiries.
“Nonetheless, we used this opportunity to reaffirm our workplace standards and emphasize the importance of fully complying with all requirements of federal and state law. The NFL and each of its member clubs remain fully committed to fair and non-discriminatory employment practices.”
Appearing on SiriusXM NFL Radio on March 7 and was asked about the most unusual thing he was asked during the combine.
“Man, it was pretty crazy, bro,” Guice said. “Some people really try to get in your head, man, and really just test your reaction and see what your reaction is going to be.
“I’d go in one room and a team would ask me do I like men, just to see my reaction. They’d try to bring up one of my family members or somebody and tell me, ‘hey, man, I heard your mom sells herself. How do you feel about that?’ Just random stuff like that, to see how you respond.”
On Wednesday night, not long after the NFL made its announcement, Guice tweeted a picture of himself outside of AT&T Stadium, where the draft is being held this year, with the caption, “Some will believe and some won’t! The way the world works!”
It’s unclear whether it’s related to the NFL investigation or not.
At an event in Arlington, Texas earlier Wednesday, Guice told reporter Ross Dellenger of Louisiana’s The Advocate that the criticism of his character in recent weeks has led him to change his wardrobe for the pre-draft red carpet. One of 22 players invited to attend the draft, he had planned on wearing something flashy, show a little personality, but that’s changed.
“I’m just going casual,” Guice said. “I already got enough backlash. Can’t really let my personality shine like normal,” the record-setting LSU running back continued. “Now I’ve got to be this person I’m not. Now I’ve got to hide who I really am, hide my personality.”
