NFL rumors: Josh Gordon to play 'fairly significant' Seahawks role vs. 49ers

The 49ers will catch their first glimpse of Josh Gordon with the Seattle Seahawks on Monday night, and they'll reportedly see a lot of him.

The wide receiver, whom Seattle claimed off waivers Nov. 1, is expected to "play a fairly significant amount" in his Seahawks debut, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported Saturday, citing a source.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll played coy when discussing Gordon's possible role, telling reporters in a Thursday conference call that he didn't know the receiver's status. But if Gordon, who had 20 catches for 287 yards and one touchdown in six games with the Patriots this season before being waived, is able to play a lot for the Seahawks, he's another weapon the 49ers must neutralize in the NFC West showdown at Levi's Stadium.

Though Gordon hasn't come close to replicating his historic 2013 season with the Browns in the intervening years, the 28-year-old has been productive over the last two seasons, catching 61 passes for 1,024 yards and five TDs since the start of 2018. Seahawks QB Russell Wilson is an MVP front-runner despite throwing to a patchwork group of wide receivers led by Tyler Lockett and D.K. Metcalf, and could use some more help in the passing game.

Even if you discount Gordon's monster campaign from six years ago, he's at worst an overqualified No. 3 option for Wilson. Considering how good Wilson has been this season without much receiver depth, him simply having another toy to play with should worry the 49ers.

Of course, the 49ers' defense will be a stiff test for Wilson and Gordon, too. San Francisco has given up fewer passing yards than any other NFL team this season, pressuring opposing QBs on a league-high 31.8 percent of pass attempts.

The first 49ers-Seahawks matchup of the season didn't need more intrigue, but Gordon's inclusion absolutely adds some.
