NFL Rumors: Jimmy G, Patriots trade not expected 'any time soon' originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

Since the San Francisco 49ers traded up to the No. 3 overall selection with the intention of selecting a quarterback, there have been questions about the status of Jimmy Garoppolo.

Would the 49ers keep him? Trade him? Cut him? They said they wanted to keep him on the team, but NFL teams often parrot such phrases to avoid damaging the confidence of the top QB on their depth chart.

That said, more rumors had emerged in recent days that a Garoppolo trade could be coming soon, and that the New England Patriots were working on a restructured contract for Tom Brady's former backup quarterback.

2021 NFL Mock Draft: How will the Patriots navigate the first round?

However, our own Tom E. Curran was told that was not yet happening. And on draft day, some more reports came in confirming that Garoppolo isn't coming to New England... at least not yet.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Patriots aren't going to be trading for Garoppolo "any time soon."

The reasons for that? The Patriots don't have the space to fit Garoppolo's contract at the moment and the two sides may have trouble agreeing on compensation to make the trade happen.

This certainly makes sense. The Patriots went on a spending spree in free agency and Garoppolo will have a cap hit of more than $26 million. If the Patriots do want to trade for Garoppolo, they'll have to either open up cap space to acquire him, or they'll have to get him to agree to a restructured deal, which certainly could be possible.

But as Rapoport said, agreeing on those terms may not be easy.

Garoppolo could still be traded to the Patriots at a later date, but it seems that both teams may just want more time to weigh their options. The Patriots could be exploring drafting a quarterback as well while the 49ers may be happy to have the experienced Garoppolo around should their rookie need time to adjust to the NFL.

We'll know more about each team's quarterback situation as the 2021 NFL Draft unfolds this Thursday through Saturday. Once the dust settles, at least after the first round, then maybe the two sides could further discuss a Garoppolo trade.
