Bettcher spent the 2018 and 2019 seasons as New York's defensive coordinator, and served as the Arizona Cardinals' D-coordinator from 2015-17. He was not with an NFL organization for the 2020 season.

The 42-year-old worked under Bruce Arians in Arizona and Pat Shurmur in New York.

Houston Texans star J.J. Watt, who was a teammate of Ryans' in 2011, was a big fan of the 49ers promoting the 36-year-old to defensive coordinator.

Ryans takes over for Robert Saleh, who is East Coast-bound to take over as the New York Jets head coach.
