NFL power rankings Week 6: San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy joins MVP race

The NFL season is still very young, with Week 6 coming up.

But some players have already begun to separate themselves in the race for the NFL MVP award.

The most surprising player near the top of the list?

San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy.

Purdy, the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, has the 49ers at 5-0 on the season after a 42-10 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football in which he threw for four touchdowns and 252 yards and completed 70.8% of his passes.

On the season, Purdy has thrown for 1,271 yards and nine touchdowns. He has completed 72.1% of his throws. He hasn't had a pass intercepted.

Mr. Irrelevant is definitely relevant in the NFL MVP discussion.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa and Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts are putting up impressive numbers and winning, just like Purdy, who doesn't get a lot of credit for running Kyle Shanahan's offensive system.

But he is running that system to near perfection, and if he can keep up this performance, and the 49ers can keep winning, Purdy might end up being one of the most unlikely NFL MVPs in history.

Purdy's 49ers enter the NFL Week 6 schedule as the No. 1 ranked team in our latest NFL power rankings.
