NFL, NFLPA alter rules for injured reserve in 2022

The NFL will handle injured reserve a little differently than they have the last couple of seasons. According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the league and the NFLPA agreed to new rules for 2022.

Teams will be able to designate a maximum of eight players to return from IR and the minimum number of games a player must miss increased from three to four.

In 2020 and 2021, due to the pandemic, the league removed the limit on the number of players a team could designate to return from IR and changed the minimum number of games a player on IR must miss to only three games.

Previously, a player who landed on IR after 53-man rosters were set had to miss at least eight games. Teams could designate a maximum of two players from return.

This eight-man limit a team can designate to return is combined between players on the 53-man roster and the practice squad.
