49ers pick cornerback Horn in Brooks' first NFL mock draft originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

At this point, it's not a secret that cornerback will be a big area of need for the 49ers this offseason. With players like Richard Sherman, Jason Verrett, Emmanuel Moseley, Ahkello Witherspoon and virtually everyone else on the roster who plays the position set to hit free agency.

Whether it's through free agency or the 2021 NFL Draft, the 49ers will have to address the position. NFL Media's Bucky Brooks, who was a defensive back himself, did just that in his first '21 mock draft by giving the 49ers Jaycee Horn out of South Carolina.

"Horn possesses the size, athleticism and bloodlines (son of former Pro Bowl WR Joe Horn) to be a tenacious cover corner and enticing option for a team in desperate need of a long-term answer at the position," Brooks wrote.

NBC Sports Bay Area's Josh Schrock also gave the 49ers Horn in his most recent mock draft. Horn is a long corner at 6-foot-1 and plays very physical. He recorded two interceptions and six passes defensed in seven games this season before opting out for the rest of the season.

Over 30 games at South Carolina, Horn ended his college career with two interceptions, 23 passes defensed, two forced fumbles, three sacks and seven tackles for loss. Pro Football Focus ranks Horn as the draft's third-best cornerback behind Virginia Tech's Caleb Farley and Alabama's Patrick Surtain II.

Here he is bullying Kyle Pitts, the top tight end in the draft.

Cornerback, along with pass rusher, offensive line and quarterback, easily is one of the 49ers' top needs this offseason. It could even be their No. 1 need when looking at the current roster construction. Is Horn the answer?

He certainly would make plenty of sense.
