Prepare your eyeballs: 'Monday Night Football' will have 3 doubleheaders, flex scheduling in 2023

The NFL's big 2022 schedule release happened just five days ago, but hopefully you're prepared for even more schedule news — this time about 2023.

On Adam Schefter's podcast, appropriately named "The Adam Schefter Podcast," the ESPN insider spoke with Mike North, the NFL's VP of broadcast scheduling, and Onnie Bose, the NFL's VP of broadcasting. North and Bose helped create the 2022 NFL schedule, and they dropped some interesting news about the 2023 schedule.

Three MNF doubleheaders

Starting in 2023, there will be three "Monday Night Football" doubleheaders, tripling the number scheduled in 2022. The single MNF doubleheader in 2022 is taking place on Week 2, with a 7:15pm ET game between the Tennessee Titans and Buffalo Bills, and an 8:30pm ET game between the Minnesota Vikings and Philadelphia Eagles.

The 2022 doubleheader is overlapping, and the earlier game gives East Coast viewers a chance to see a complete football game that will likely end before midnight. While that could end up working out well, North said that they don't know yet if they'll follow the same overlapping format for 2023. They're using the Week 2 doubleheader to gain some knowledge they can apply to the 2023 MNF schedule. The 2023 doubleheaders could be staggered, or they could kick off at the same time, or any number of other options.

Flex scheduling comes to MNF

North also announced news that some fans will like even more. Starting in 2023, MNF games from Weeks 14-18 will finally be subject to flex scheduling.

While that could be bad news for fans who will try to attend games that were originally scheduled for Monday night, North said that they plan to schedule those December MNF games the same way they handle "Sunday Night Football" games. When a game is placed in one of those prime time spots, it's a game they're "counting on" to be played. North said that they flex games into SNF very rarely, and they plan to use the same philosophy with MNF.

So essentially, the changes for 2023 amount to more prime time football on Monday nights, and the possibility of seeing games with major playoff implications played in prime time in December. Hopefully the world is ready for more MNF by the time 2023 rolls around.
