The Tennessee Volunteers are the next team up in our series examining potential Atlanta Falcons draft targets from surrounding schools. Previously, I have outlined prospects from Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and Auburn.

While the Vols may not offer much in 2021, there are two prospects that should be on Atlanta’s radar in this year’s draft.

Trey Smith - IOL

Projection: Rounds 2 - 3 If the Falcons really want to get a better ground game established, Trey Smith could beef up the offensive line. Smith has no issues getting to the second level of a defense to create lanes for the ball carrier. He is also an efficient pass blocker and is always looking to help put a hat on a defender. Atlanta could find a day-one starter in Smith or a potential backup to Matt Gono. Smith can be an effective starter on the professional level. His biggest drawback is his medical history. In 2018, he suffered what was nearly a career-ending blood clot in his lungs. Smith remains a top prospect, but this is obviously something teams will be aware of during the draft.

Josh Palmer - WR

Projection: Rounds 6 - 7 Palmer has the frame of a receiver built to play along the perimeter and could be a solid selection as the draft winds to a close. The Vols wideout plays the ball in the air well, with enough size and athleticism to contort his body into position to make big plays. However, once you get past his size and speed, there are plenty of limitations to consider. He has a limited route tree and his time at Tennessee never saw him expand upon it. Getting in and out of breaks is an area he needs to improve on. Despite having rather reliable hands, Palmer also tends to double-catch passes unnecessarily. The Falcons still need to find an X receiver to play behind Julio, and Palmer could be a developmental guy.
