NFL Draft Grades: Carolina Panthers’ Bryce Young

With the 2023 NFL draft in the books and the dust finally settled, it’s time to take a look back on the top selections of the draft and grade the selection and the fit with the team. Bryce Young was an easy choice for the Carolina Panthers and it seems like a perfect pairing.

Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire recently graded the entire first round of the 2023 draft and gave the Panther an ‘A’ for their selection of Young.

“This wouldn’t even be a question if Young stood 6-foot-2 and weighed 210 pounds,” writes Farrar. “The fact that he has the same height/weight profile as Doug Flutie doesn’t negate his ability to call plays, read protections, execute a fully-formed passing game in and out of the pocket, and win against pressure to a preposterous degree. The Panthers have the first pick for the first time since they took Cam Newton in 2011, and their next real franchise quarterback is right here. Young is the first Alabama player to be selected first overall in the common draft era, and the first since Joe Namath in 1965.”

Young joins the NFC South at its weakest and could make Carolina a true competitor in the division. Everything about this pick works out for the Panthers; and as Farrar mentioned, the only flaws Young had during the draft process were concerns over size. His on-field abilities were never brought into question.

Young now has a few months to prepare with his new franchise before taking the field as the starting quarterback in the 2023 season.
