Eagles first round pick Jalen Reagor officially joined the franchise's long list of wide receivers on Thursday night, and now he gets to create his own story as an Eagle. A trivial, but also important, part of that identity will be his jersey number, and it sounds like Reagor has one in mind.
Reagor went live on Instagram with licensed collectibles brand Panini America after he was picked Thursday, and he dropped a few important hints about what number he might wear when he suits up in midnight green:
I don't know yet! I don't know what number I want. No 80s. [To someone off-screen] Can't wear single digits, I can't get 11. Yeah, I might go back to the 18.
That's not a direct answer, but we can certainly assemble some puzzle pieces here.
Reagor eliminated all of the 80s jersey numbers, which is in line with the recent trend of star wide receivers opting for the 10s instead of the 80s. That's a good start.
We can also eliminate jersey numbers in the 10s that are in use by players who will definitely be on the 2020 roster: 10, 11, 17, and 19.
Reagor ending the clip by saying he might go with 18, which he wore at TCU before changing to 1, and 18 certainly fits within those parameters.
To me, 18 feels like the right choice for Reagor. It's a throwback to another Eagles first-round wide receiver selection, Jeremy Maclin, who was obviously excellent during his time with the Birds. Just think of all the fans out there who can re-purpose their old 18 jerseys with some masking tape and a Sharpie!
Plus, lesser wideouts like Shelton Gibson and Dorial Green-Beckham have sullied the number for Eagles wideouts since Maclin's tenure, so Reagor can revitalize the number's place in the Eagles WR pantheon.
We'll find out soon enough if 18 is actually the rook's choice.
