At long last, the Khalil Mack trade can be put to rest.
On Thursday, the Raiders used the second first-round pick they acquired from the Chicago Bears in 2018 for Mack to select Ohio State cornerback Damon Arnette at No. 19 overall. On Day 2 of the NFL draft Friday, the Raiders added the final piece of Mack puzzle to the roster when they took South Carolina wide receiver Bryan Edwards with a third-round pick acquired from the Bears at No. 81 overall.
Edwards is a big-body receiver at 6-foot-3 with solid hands. He is a nuanced route-runner, but he does have some separation issues.
Prior to the 2018 season, the Raiders traded Mack, a second-round pick and a seventh-round selection to the Bears for two first-round picks, a third-rounder and a conditional fifth-rounder.
The Raiders used the 2019 first-round pick acquired in the trade to draft running back Josh Jacobs, who was the runner-up for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. They added Arnette with the second first-round pick. The Bears drafted Notre Dame tight end Cole Kmet with the No. 43 overall pick Friday, and now only a seventh-round pick, which Chicago will use Saturday, remains of the deal. But the deal, for all intents and purposes, now is done.
While some of the picks traded hands after the deal -- a flurry of trades helped the Raiders turn one of those selections into Trayvon Mullen in 2019 -- the Mack transaction will boil down mostly to an All-Pro edge rusher versus Jacobs and Arnette, unless Kmet or Edwards become perennial All-Pro talents.
Jacobs was an absolute stud during his rookie season, looking every bit the franchise workhorse he was drafted to be. Arnette is being viewed as a reach at No. 19, but there's no doubt the Ohio State product can play. He's tough and physical, and has an underdog mentality that Gruden will love.
It will take some time to fully judge the Mack trade, but if Edwards can live up to his potential, it could give the Silver and Black the final edge in what was a polarizing deal.
