Next stop, AFCON Round of 16 for Diatta and Jakobs!

The two Monegasque wingbacks, both starters during the clash between Senegal and Cameroon, participated in a convincing win for the Lions of Teranga (3-1), synonymous with a place in the round of 16 of the competition.

There was almost never a doubt! After thumping Gambia four days before (3-0), for their entry into the Africa Cup of Nations, Krépin Diatta and Ismail Jakobs experienced the taste of victory again Friday evening. Against André Onana’s Cameroon, in the headline clash of Group C, our two Monegasques made short work of their fellow “lions.”

Regular starters

Both were in the eleven, playing four at the back for Aliou Cissé, and the Rouge et Blanc wingbacks quickly got to grip with the match. This was true of their team’s  first scorer, Ismaïla Sarr, decisive on a deflected shot following a corner (1-0, 16′), putting Senegal on the right track. Still dominant, the Marseille winger’s teammates then managed their advantage until the break. In little trouble, they even doubled the lead shortly after the hour mark, thanks to the former Strasbourg player, Habib Diallo (2-0, 71′).

A late delivery

Unsettled, Cameroon responded through another well-known player in Ligue 1, NantesJean-Charles Castelletto, once again on a corner kick (2-1, 83′). But superior in the game, the Lions of Téranga put an end to the suspense thanks to the inevitable Sadio Mané in added time (3-1, 95′). The final score was 3-1  — Senegal’s second win in as many matches, synonymous with qualification for the round of 16 of the competition.

Spectators of the title won by the two former Monegasques trained at the Academy, Abdou Diallo and Nampalys Mendy, two years ago, Krépin Diatta and Ismail Jakobs can still dream of repeating the feat in the Ivory Coast. In the meantime, they will return to Guinea in three days, to seal first place in the group. Daghe Monaco! 🇸🇳
