NEXT REALM: Former area star helps team stun larger foe; Shelley grabs 'W'

Following is an update on how some former area athletes are faring in college competition.

CHESNIE HEWITT (Oklahoma Union)

Murray State (softball)

Coming off the most powerful spring season in its history, the Murray State softball team made a major statement this week in abbreviated fall ball.

And, a former area prep star played a major role.

Murray State — a junior college — swept a twinbill against the NCAA-level Southwestern Oklahoma State University team, 3-1 and 5-2.

In the 3-1 victory, Oklahoma Union High graduate Chesnie Hewitt hit in the leadoff spot for Murray State, belted two singles and drove in two runs. She also scored a run. Other Murray State contributors included Shallen Mershon with a RBI and Avery Fleming with a sacrifice. Alexa Hopkins and Christian Clark took turns pitching.

Hewitt sat in the second game. Some of the offensive standouts included Alanna Noble (2-for-4) and Mattie Richardson, Morgan Skold, Karsyn York and Rayna Rock with a RBI each.

Murray State eyes several other autumn tests in October and early November.

The primary season takes place in the spring.

Last spring, Murray State surged to a 47-11 record and finished as the national runner-up in the National Junior College Athletic Association World Series. Phoenix College outlasted Murray State in the final.

Last season, Hewitt batted .347, scored 58 runs and drove in 37.
