Newton boys win three times at Central College indoor meet

Mar. 19—PELLA — The Newton boys' track and field team hasn't even competed in an outdoor meet, and Caden Klein has already posted a career-best time in the 400-meter dash.

The Cardinal sophomore was part of two victories at the Central College High School Boys Indoor meet on Friday. Newton recorded three wins in all and finished in the top five in seven events.

Klein's win in the 400 was clocked in a career-best 52.08 seconds. Dawson Maki finished 14th in 57.37.

Reilly Trease also won the 60 hurdles and the Cardinals were victorious in the 4x400 relay.

Trease posted a time of 8.6 seconds to win the 60 hurdles and Curtis Payne was seventh in 8.95.

The foursome of Payne, Caden Klein, Cody Klein and Christian Ergenbright won the 4x400 relay in 3 minutes, 32.41 seconds.

The next best individual finish came from Thomas Stadelmann in the shot put. He finished third with a toss of 46 feet, 5 1/2 inches.

Coleby Revell ended up 13th with a career-best heave of 40-8 1/4 and Landon Robertson finished 27th with a throw of 36-4 3/4.

Ergenbright finished fourth in the 200 and the Cardinals were fourth in both the 4x200 and 4x800 relays.

Ergenbright's 200 time was clocked in 23.86 seconds. Lance Zaabel also was seventh in the 3,200 with a career-best time of 10:51.13.

In the 60 dash, Qhjuan Coley was seventh in 7.32. He qualified for the finals in 11th with a time of 7.45. Jace Auen also competed in the event and was 48th in 7.76.

In the 4x800 relay, the team of Landon Menninga, Javin Doland, Asher Wood and Levi Zaabel finished fourth in 9:02.89. That was faster than any time posted last season.

Trease, Alameen Santo, Auen and Ali Yahia were fourth in the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:42.38.
