A men’s college hockey game between Northeastern and Notre Dame at Matthews Ice Arena was stopped after two periods because a Zamboni broke down while resurfacing the ice.

The score was 0-0 when play was suspended after 40 minutes.

Northeastern Athletics wrote a summary of how the situation occurred.

The delay began during the second intermission when one of the Northeastern Zamboni’s broke down in the left corner of the ice, causing that portion of the ice unable to freeze. After a delay, the ice was deemed unplayable and play was suspended.

According to SB Nation’s college hockey blog, the game was originally supposed to end in a tie after an hour-long delay. But Notre Dame coach Jeff Jackson and Northeastern coach Jeff Madigan decided to look into the possibility of resuming the game at another point.

Notre Dame’s athletics website, said the teams “will attempt to make up the third period later in the season at a date to be determined if scheduling allows.”

Northeastern beat Notre Dame 5-2 in their Saturday game.
