Outfielder Brennan Boesch signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the New York Yankees, CBS Sports reported Saturday.
The deal comes two days after Boesch was let go by the Detroit Tigers.
Boesch, 27, batted .240 with 12 home runs in 503 plate appearances last year.
The left-handed-hitting Boesch has a .367 average in 32 plate appearances lifetime at Yankee Stadium.
He could play left field as part of an outfield with Brett Gardner and Ichiro Suzuki while center fielder Curtis Granderson is out with a broken forearm.
The move could allow Juan Rivera (also an outfielder) to play first base while Mark Teixeira recovers from a wrist injury. If that occurs, then the Yankees can keep Kevin Youkilis at third base. Youkilis was signed to replace Alex Rodriguez, who is out at least half the season after having hip surgery.
