The New York Yankees changed their plans for Phil Hughes, who is now scheduled to start Saturday's game against the Detroit Tigers.
He began the season on the disabled list because of a bulging disc in his back.
The Yankees originally planned to have him make a rehab start in the minors Saturday. But instead, they announced after Friday's game that Hughes has been activated and will start against the Tigers.
David Phelps will go to the bullpen to make room for Hughes in the rotation.
Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News reported Hughes' bags were already checked in for a flight to Newark when he learned that he would be going to Detroit instead.
Hughes went 16-13 with a 4.19 ERA for the Yankees last year.
