Wiltjer's future at Kentucky remains uncertain
Kyle Wiltjer has played two seasons at Kentucky under John Calipari. Whether he plays another game in Lexington remains in doubt.
The 6-foot-9 forward who averaged 10.2 points during his sophomore season received permission from Calipari last month to look into transferring. He already has visited Gonzaga, but is not 100 percent committed to leaving Lexington, his father told the Portland Tribune.
"Kyle is midway through the college process," Greg Wiltjer said.
The Wiltjers look into the future and believe that minutes could be scarce next season. Willie Cauley-Stein and Alex Poythress are back and Calipari has five-star recruits that will litter the roster. Julius Randle, Dakari Johnson and Marcus Lee are frontcourt players who are expected to contribute right away. Five-star perimeter players Andrew Harrison, Aaron Harrison and James Young are also bound for Kentucky.
"The reason he chose Kentucky was a chance to win a national championship, play with the best players in the nation and be in position to have an opportunity to play beyond college. Now he's looking at what lies in front of him," the elder Wiltjer said.
If Wiltjer does not transfer, he could decide to redshirt, an idea that has Calipari's support.
Wiltjer started 10 games for Kentucky last year. He was also in the rotation as a freshman when Kentucky won the national title in 2012.
The Tribune reported Wiltjer spent two days last week with coach Mark Few touring the facilities at Gonzaga.
Few and his staff "would very much love to have him," Greg Wiltjer said, "but Kyle hasn't made a commitment that he's going there. He has some specific needs. They'll either get met at Kentucky or one or two other schools."
