The White Sox all-Garcia outfield is set to make baseball history

If you enjoy baseball trivia, then you’ll love what the Chicago White Sox are doing Friday night.

For the team’s series opener against the Twins in Minnesota, manager Rick Renteria will roll out an outfield consisting of Willy Garcia in left field, Leury Garcia in center field and Avisail Garcia in right field.

Yes, that’s an all-Garcia outfield, and according to Elias Sports it will mark the first time in baseball history a team has started three outfielders with the same last name is  the same game.

For the love of Hawk Harrelson, this has the potential to be very confusing. Imagine though if it happened one day later, when every player in MLB will be wearing the No. 42 in honor of Jackie Robinson.

The potential of an all-Garcia outfield was not on anyone’s radar until early Friday. That’s when Willy Garcia was summoned from Triple-A Charlotte to replace Melky Cabrera, who will be gone on paternity leave for the weekend.

The fact that the Garcia — who are not related — are starting together is an important distinction. Many fans are aware that the Alou brothers — Felipe, Jesus and Matty — played in the same outfield on three different occasions. However, they never actually started together, which is kind of amazing considering that possibility existed.

To us, it’s impossible to top three brothers sharing an outfield. But that takes nothing away from the three Garcia who are carving out their own unique place in baseball history.
