Week 5: Looks and Touches

Mike Harmon
Yahoo! Sports

The following is a list of the Week 4 leaders in looks and touches. It defines those running backs and receivers who received the most attention this past weekend.

Touches is defined as the number of times a running back carried or caught the football.
Looks is defined as the number of times a player was the intended target of a pass.

It was another busy week on the gridiron. Joe Jurevicius and Jerramy Stevens obliterated the St. Louis secondary. Tatum Bell ran wild against the Redskins. Jerome Bettis took over for Willie Parker and shouldered the load down the stretch for the Steelers. And Matt Schaub showed that the Falcons have a solid insurance card for Michael Vick. Let's break down the workload for Week 5.

Looks:
With Marcel Shipp and J.J. Arrington still sputtering in the running game, Josh McCown has taken to the air with great frequency, nearly turning in a 400-yard game in the loss to Carolina. Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin tied for first among all receivers with 17 looks each this week. Was someone on the sidelines keeping score?

The Washington passing attack wasn't expected to mount much intrigue this season with the return of Jon Jansen to the O-Line and the expected power running game. However, Mark Brunell has found a steady target in offseason acquisition Santana Moss. Moss is averaging over 11 looks per game, and has given Brunell and the Redskins a viable deep threat to open things up for Clinton Portis.

After a huge performance in Week 4, Donte' Stallworth laid a big goose egg in what was expected to be a huge spot against the Green Bay secondary. Joe Horn was sidelined again with his hamstring injury. Stallworth managed one single catch for six yards (five looks), while veteran Az-zahir Hakim dominated Aaron Brooks' attention. Hakim was targeted 13 times by Brooks in the 52-3 burial by the Packers.

The latest report on Cleveland rookie Braylon Edwards' arm infection has him sidelined for up to two additional months of action. That's big news for this week's waiver wire standout Antonio Bryant. Bryant scored two touchdowns in the 20-10 victory over Chicago and was targeted nine times by Trent Dilfer. For the season, he has been targeted an average of 8.5 times per game.

Touches:
Steven Jackson assumed the top RB spot in St. Louis this offseason, and has now strangled Marshall Faulk almost entirely out of the picture. Despite the proficiency of the Rams' passing attack, Jackson is averaging 22.5 touches per week.

Is it still too early to take the "Fragile" tag off of Jaguars back Fred Taylor? With another yeoman effort in this week's win over Cincinnati, the much-maligned back has averaged 24 touches per week this season. Taylor's not a frequent visitor to the end zone, but with uncertainty lurking in backfields all over the NFL, he's a top starter right now.

The Broncos backfield is now a full on battle between Tatum Bell and Mike Anderson after Bell's breakout performance against the stout Washington run defense. Bell had a slightly heavier workload in this particular game, but the shift has begun for him to rise up and take the lion's share of work going forward.

With an expected passing war between Atlanta and New England on Sunday, T.J. Duckett saw his workload diminished, tallying a meager five touches on the day. And, in what was a prime situation for this TD vulture to tack on another score, the Falcons called on Duckett to block while Matt Schaub tossed a TD pass to Justin Griffith.
