The San Diego Padres released right-hander Edinson Volquez on Tuesday after he passed through waivers unclaimed.
Volquez was designated for assignment by the team last week after a dismal start against the Chicago Cubs in which he gave up six runs in the first inning before getting an out. After clearing waivers, he is now free to sign with any club.
The 30-year-old was 9-10 with a 6.01 ERA in 27 starts this season.
After Volquez went 17-6 in his first season with the Cincinnati Reds in 2008 and made the National League All-Star team, his production steadily declined. Plagued by injuries since then, he posted a 33-33 record the past four years.
Volquez was part of the trade that sent Josh Hamilton to the Texas Rangers in 2008.
