Right-hander Ryan Vogelsong of the San Francisco Giants, sidelined since breaking the pinkie finger on his right hand May 20, played catch on Monday for the first time since having surgery.
Vogelsong threw for about five minutes to trainer Dave Groeschner before the Giants' game against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ballpark.
"This is a good step for me," Vogelsong said. "It felt good. There was nothing in my hand. The ball felt good when it was coming out of my hand. Everything went well. There's a little weakness, but that's to be expected."
Vogelsong had the splint on his injured finger removed last Tuesday and had been looking forward to throwing for the first time.
While the finger is still swollen, he said he didn't experience any pain or irritation while throwing.
Vogelsong said he has been squeezing a baseball in the dugout during games and trying to get his fingers stretched out so he can throw his changeup when he returns. He also has been tossing the ball in the air with a curveball grip.
There is no timetable for his return.
