Virginia Commonwealth broke open a close game in the second half and ended a two-game losing streak with a 70-64 victory over Rhode Island on Wednesday in Kingston, R.I.
VCU (17-5, 5-2 Atlantic 10) led just 29-28 at halftime, then 43-41 with 11:57 to play. However, Virginia Commonwealth then went on a 19-6 run to go up by 15 with four minutes to play before having to hold off a late Rhode Island surge.
Treveon Graham led VCU with 19 points, thanks to an 8-for-11 night at the free-throw line. Teammate Juvonte Reddic had another double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. It was the fourth double-double for the junior forward in his past five games, and he is averaging a double-double in Atlantic 10 play.
It was a sloppy night for VCU, which turned the ball over 18 times and went just 2-for-11 from three-point range. Still, Virginia Commonwealth was able to bounce back from losses to Richmond and La Salle.
Xavier Munford had 17 points for Rhode Island (6-13, 1-5). The home team turned the ball over 17 times and got outrebounded 32-21.
VCU returns home to play Fordham on Saturday, while Rhode Island plays at No. 9 Butler the same day.
