Valparaiso defeats Georgia Southern 85-54

VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) -- Kevin Van Wijk scored 16 points and Jordan Coleman was to lead Valparaiso to an 85-54 victory over Georgia Southern on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

Van Wijk was 5 of 8 from the field, and made 6 of 7 free throws. He led the team with three steals. Jordan Coleman made 4 of 4 3-poin shots, finishing the game with 15 points. Ryan Broekhoff scored 14 points for the Crusaders.

Valparaiso led 40-21 at halftime.

The Crusaders were 85 percent at the free throw line and were 13 of 24 on 3-pointers. Valparaiso scored 36 points off of Georgia Southern turnovers.

Cleon Roberts led the Eagles with 18 points, including a 3-pointer and 9 of 12 free throws. Eric Ferguson added 16 points and Tre Bussey scored 10, including two 3-pointers.

Valparaiso won both of its exhibition games by 28 points.
