As a redshirt freshman, and a backup quarterback, USC's Max Wittek isn't an old hand at dealing with the media.
He might have learned a lesson Tuesday about being careful with his word choices.
Wittek, who will fill in for injured senior Matt Barkley this week, was asked his thoughts about Saturday's game against No. 1 Notre Dame.
"I'm going to go out there, I'm going to play within myself, within the system, and we're going to win this ballgame," Wittek said in an interview with 710 ESPN Radio.
Numerous media outlets latched onto the "we're going to win this ballgame" quote and produced headlines announcing that Wittek guaranteed a win.
The Los Angeles Times, however, put the comment into context. According to the newspaper, Wittek came across sounding confident, though he might not have intended to say a victory was assured.
Barkley is out due to a sprained right shoulder, giving Wittek his first opportunity to start. Wittek has appeared in three games this season, completing eight of nine passes for 95 yards and a touchdown. He hasn't thrown an interception, and he's been sacked once.
After replacing Barkley on Saturday in the Trojans' 38-28 loss to UCLA, Wittek completed all three of his passes for a total of 40 yards.
