It didn't take long for “Mighty Mouse” to save the day.
Demetrious Johnson knocked out Joseph Benavidez at UFC on Fox 9′s main event in Sacramento, Calif. on Saturday night.
Johnson landed a right hand that sent the challenger crashing to the floor, putting Benavidez out cold at the 2:08 mark of the opening round.
“A lot of people say I don't have knockout power, but I just displayed I'm only getting better working with AMC and … all the coaches,” Johnson said.
“Me and my coaches,” he added, “we're trying to work on setting my weight down and landing big power shots.”
The two fighters, as expected, threw punches at a quick pace, but each of them kept composed as the other threw flurries.
Benavidez closed the distance on Johnson, spinning around with his back facing the fence after a near clinch. Johnson then closed distance and landed a looping right punch, dropping his opponent to the floor.
Johnson pursued his foe to the ground, landing four more strikes before the referee stepped in to put a stop to the damage.
With the win, Johnson successfully defends his flyweight title and is without a loss in the division, now 5-0-1 in the UFC 125-pound weight class.
In defeat, Benavidez drops to 19-4 with two his losses coming at the hands of Johnson.
