UCLA avoids elimination, beats CSU Bakersfield 9-1

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- UCLA's Kevin Kramer hit the second pitch of the game for a home run, and Cody Poteet and three relievers shut down CSU Bakersfield 9-1 in an elimination game in the Los Angeles Regional on Sunday night. Tyler Moore hit a three-run homer off Steven Gee (5-4) in the seventh inning, when the Bruins scored five unearned runs to break the game open. Luke Persico had a two-run single in a three-run eighth for the Bruins (44-15), the No. 1 overall seed in the 64-team NCAA field. Poteet (7-1) gave up three singles in 5 1/3 scoreless innings. Pinch-hitter Nick Vehlewald homered in the ninth for CSU Bakersfield (37-24-1), which made its first postseason appearance in its seven years in NCAA Division I. Darrell Miller Jr. had two hits and scored twice for UCLA, which needs to beat Maryland twice to advance to the Super Regionals.
