Senior guard Ryan Sypkens made a number of big plays, helping UC Davis beat Loyola-Chicago 64-61 in overtime Saturday in the second round of the Portland State Tournament at the Peter W. Stott Center in Portland, Ore.
Junior guard Corey Hawkins scored 17 points for the Aggies (3-2), including seven points in overtime. Sypkens scored 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting from 3-point range.
Sophomore guard Devon Turk scored 17 points for the Ramblers (2-4). Junior swingman Christian Thomas had 14 points and sophomore guard Jeff White added 11.
Sypkens made a 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds to play in regulation, sending the game into overtime. He made another big 3-pointer in the extra session and ended the game with a critical defensive stop.
Freshman guard Milton Doyle made a free throw to cut the Aggies lead to 62-61 with less than 30 seconds to play in the extra period. Doyle missed the second free throw, but the Aggies failed to secure the rebound, giving the Ramblers an opportunity to win the game.
White came off a screen from forward Matt O'Leary and dished to Doyle, who dribbled right with his eyes on the basket. Sypkens swiped the ball from Doyle, dashed downcourt and passed to Hawkins for a layup, extending the lead to three with less than 5 seconds to play.
Doyle missed a long heave at the buzzer. He went into the game averaging 17 points per game, but he was held to nine points.
