TOWSON, Md. -- Senior forward Jerrelle Benimon posted his first double-double of the season, leading Towson to a 95-75 victory over Morgan State on Tuesday evening at SECU Arena.
Benimon posted 23 points, 14 rebounds and six assists to lead the Tigers, who received a vote in the Associated Press Top 25 for the first time in school history this week after beating Navy 72-45 in their season opener. Senior swingman Rafriel Guthrie scored 18 points and senior forward Marcus Damas added 17 for Towson, which shot 57.1 percent while holding Morgan State to 42.9 percent.
Senior guard Justin Black scored a game-high 28 points for Morgan State. Senior guard Anthony Hubbard had 14 points.
The game remained close through the first five minutes before Towson opened up a large lead later in the half. The Bears trailed 14-12 after Cedric Blossom scored with 15:12 remaining in the opening period, but Jerome Hairston answered with a 3-pointer to spark an 8-2 run for the Tigers.
Towson mounted another 8-2 run moments later to take a 36-23 lead on a 3-point play by Jamel Flash with 7:43 to go. The Tigers maintained a double-digit lead through the rest of the half and carried a 48-31 lead into the locker room at the break.
Towson continued to pull away in the second half, outscoring 16-8 over the first 7:33 to take a 64-39 lead on a layup by Damas with 12:27 to play. Morgan State cut the deficit to 18 about three minutes later, but the Tigers outscored the Bears 13-2 over a span of 2:32 to take an 82-53 lead with 6:34 remaining.
