Jerrelle Benimon scored 32 points, and Marcus Damas added 16, and the two senior forwards grabbed 10 rebounds apiece to lead Towson to a 75-69 win over Temple on Thursday in a non-conference game at Towson, Md..
Benimon hit two free throws with 13 seconds left to give the Tigers a 73-69 lead and seal the victory. Towson is now 3-0 for the first time since 1972. The Tigers downed Temple for the first time in four tries.
Forward Anthony Lee had 20 points for Temple (1-2), and guard Will Cummings had 18.
Temple led 53-46 midway through the second half, but Damas made a layup with 7:01 to play to give Towson a 57-56 edge. Benimon scored with 3:04 left to give the Tigers a 66-60 edge, and Damas scored with 1:22 left to make it 68-62.
The Owls cut it to 68-65 with 1:13 left on a 3-pointer by Quenton DeCosey. Temple missed a layup with 24 seconds to go, but Lee made two free throws with 23 ticks left to pull the Owls to within 69-67. Towson's Four McGlynn made two free throws with 21 seconds left to make it 71-67.
Temple led 36-31 at halftime despite missing all five of its shots from 3-point range. The Owls finished 3-for-10 from long range, and they made 45.5 percent of their shots overall. Towson made just 31.4 percent of its shots in the first half, 36.2 percent overall.
Next up for Towson is a game Sunday at Villanova. Temple will next face Clemson on Nov. 21 in the Charleston Classic in South Carolina.
The Owls were 24-10 last season, while Towson was 18-13 after 15 consecutive losing seasons.
