Top Featherweight Contenders Ricardo Lamas and Chan Sung Jung Square Off at UFC 162

Top Featherweight Contenders Ricardo Lamas and Chan Sung Jung Square Off at UFC 162

Ricardo Lamas and Chan Sung Jung both have strong claims to a shot at UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo, but the next one is going to Anthony Pettis. With the champ booked, Lamas and “The Korean Zombie” will instead fight each other at UFC 162: Silva vs. Weidman on July 6 in Las Vegas.

UFC officials announced the Lamas vs. Jung fight late Wednesday night.

Lamas (9-2) made the drop to featherweight at the same time he made the move to the Octagon following the WEC shutdown. He hasn’t looked back.

Lamas is 4-0 at 145 pounds, reeling off victories over Matt Grice, Cub Swanson, Hatsu Hioki, and Erik Koch, that latter three all Top 10 fighters.

After defeating Koch, Lamas was hoping to get a shot at Aldo following the champion’s victory over Frankie Edgar on Super Bowl weekend. He’ll instead have to go through the Korean Zombie first.

Jung (13-3), like Lamas, is undefeated during his UFC tenure, racking up wins over Leonard Garcia, Mark Hominick, and Dustin Poirier.

Unlike Lamas, Jung will have been on the sidelines for more than a year when they finally meet in the Octagon. Jung had a torn rotator cuff when he fought Poirier in May of last year and had to undergo surgery to repair it.

UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva squares off with Chris Weidman in the UFC 162 main event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
