There isn't always room for niceties in the world of professional sport, but French tennis player Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has bucked the trend.

You might remember him helping out a ball girl who was in tears after being struck by a ball at last year's Australian Open, stopping the match to accompany her off the court.

Here's a video of the moment to help jog your memory.

Well, twelve months on, the ball girl — real name Giuliana — penned a thank you card to the Frenchman, which he shared on Facebook while back in Melbourne for the tennis tournament.

"Dear Mr Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, I wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you for helping me out on court during your round 2 match of the Australian Open 2016," the letter reads.

"I'm not sure if you remember me but I was the ball girl you escorted off court. I would also like to take this opportunity to apologise for all the times when you asked for the ball but I didn't service it to you or acknowledge you."

The card revealed Giuliana had a virus on the day that also affected her hearing and vision, hence inhibiting her performance on the court. The expectations for these ball kids are understandably set quite high.

"Thank you so much for the kindness you showed me. I really appreciate that you were able to see that I needed some help and were kind enough to escort me off court," Giuliana added. She signed off the card with her name and her ball kid number, #180.

At the time, Tsonga told reporters that he "didn't do anything special" by helping her off the court, but he did thank Giuliana for her letter Sunday. What a guy, hey.
