Auburn transfer Stephen Davis Jr. is going to the SEC East.

The son of the former Auburn and NFL running back of the same name will transfer to South Carolina. Stephen Davis Sr. told the State his son was transferring to the Gamecocks and the news was confirmed by Rivals’

The transfer across the SEC’s divisions isn’t a seamless one. Since Auburn blocked his transfer to a school inside the SEC, Davis is choosing to walk on at South Carolina this season. His walk-on year will be spent as the year he sits out because of NCAA rules and he’ll have three years to play three seasons at South Carolina.

Davis Jr. was a redshirt freshman at Auburn in 2016. He was recruited as an athlete out of high school after playing both running back and safety and was recruited to the Tigers by current South Carolina coach Will Muschamp.

Muschamp was the defensive coordinator at Auburn when he chased after Davis.

Davis Jr.’s move may make Auburn officials a bit jealous. The topic of Auburn moving to the SEC East continued to be a thing at the SEC’s spring meetings on Tuesday. Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs told reporters that he wants to start a serious conversations about switching divisions with Missouri.

“I’m not trying to spark a legitimate conversation. I think it’s a legitimate conversation to have at some point as a league,” Jacobs said Wednesday at the SEC Spring Meetings. “For Mizzou to be in the West and Auburn to be in the East, it makes sense. We’re out there a little ways on football scheduling, so we’re not going to talk anything formally about it this weekend or this week — but at some point we will.” also notes that Jacobs has informed SEC commissioner Greg Sankey of his desire for the school to swap divisions. Auburn is the team furthest east in the SEC West while Missouri is one of just four teams in the SEC located west of the Mississippi River. The other three — Arkansas, LSU and Texas A&M — are in the West with Auburn.

A native of South Carolina, Davis was a four-star athlete in the class of 2016 and the No. 3 prospect in the state.
