Pittsburgh Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey apologized Monday after being photographed with his brother -- Miami Dolphins center Mike Pouncey -- while wearing caps that read "Free Hernandez."
The photos of the twin brothers wearing the caps while at a nightclub emerged on the internet Sunday.
"I fully recognize the seriousness of the situation involving my former teammate, and I regret that my actions appear to make light of that serious situation. I apologize to anyone who was offended by my actions," Pouncey wrote in a link that was sent to his Twitter followers.
ESPN reported earlier Monday that Maurkice Pouncey was meeting with the Steelers to discuss the photos while Mike Pouncey was expected to meet with the Dolphins. No apology from Mike Pouncey has been publicly made yet.
The Pouncey twins played with former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez at the University of Florida. Hernandez was released from the Patriots in June after being charged with murdering 27-year-old semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd.
The brothers were with Hernandez at a club the night of a 2007 shooting that wounded two people. Hernandez was questioned by police about the shooting.
