A video was released on Friday titled “Standing Pats (Be Patriots)”. This video contains the thoughts from a variety of Patriots’ fans as well as a few Patriots’ players like Devin McCourty and Chris Long. This video has been released to remind everyone what the Patriots stand for. This video was made in light of the New England team taking the traditional trip to the White House after their historic Super Bowl win.

In the video McCourty, Long and Hightower explain their reasoning behind skipping the traditional visit to the White House. McCourty said, “obviously, you want to switch the narrative…so for me, it was simple. I don’t believe in excluding other people.” McCourty went on to explain that he knew not attending was the right option to choose “because it was something I thought about before we even won the game”
As for Long the message was clear. He wanted to set the right example for his child. In the video Long said, “(When) my son grows up—I don’t want him to say, ‘Hey dad, why’d you go when you knew the right thing was not to go?”
A few other Patriots’ players that chose to sit out on the visit to the White House were Dont’a Hightower, Alan Branch, LeGarrette Blount and Martellus Bennett. The video is a reminder of what it means to be a Patriot, whether that is as a fan or a member of the team. The video empowers others to stand up for what you believe in even if others refuse to follow.
Being a Patriot doesn’t have to mean putting on protective pads and taking to the field. The meaning resonates on a much deeper level than that. The Patriots fought to the very end of what will forever be known as one of the greatest comebacks in NFL history. Some Patriots’ fans may have stopped watching half way through the game but there was always a chance that New England could pull it off.
In the end, New England delivered above and beyond any expectations. The players that decided not to go are being looked upon as role models for standing up when others wouldn’t. They took the time that would usually be reserved for celebrating a historic win to educate people and show what they believe is the right way. The message here is to “Be Patriots” and stand proud for the important things that matter to you.
