Southern U outlasts Prairie View A&M 60-57

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas (AP) -- Calvin Godfrey and Malcolm Miller each scored 16 points as Southern U edged Prairie View A&M 60-57 in a Southwestern Athletic Conference opener for both teams Saturday night.

Trailing by 50-45 late, the Jaguars (5-9, 1-0) pulled within one after layups by Javan Mitchell and Christopher Hyder.

Prairie View (2-11, 0-1) responded with a Tre Hagood free throw and a lay-in by Demondre Chapman. Southern U countered as Hyder hit another layup and Miller drained a 3-pointer to grab the lead. Godfrey followed with four free throws to push the lead to six.

The Panthers cut their deficit to two after two layups by John Brisco. After a split pair of free throws by Godfrey, Brisco couldn't connect on a 3-point attempt in the final seconds.

Southern U shot 46.8 percent from the field. Hyder finished with eight assists.

Brisco paced Prairie View with 17 points.
