Virginia Tech hires Marquette coach Buzz Williams

New Virginia Tech athletic director Whit Babcock has pulled his first big coup at the school, hiring Buzz Williams away from Marquette, sources told Yahoo Sports.

Williams just completed his sixth season at Marquette. He took the Golden Eagles to the NCAA tournament the first five years before missing the tourney this season. Marquette was 17-15, 9-9 in the Big East.

Williams' name had surfaced in connection to several jobs in recent years. Virginia Tech is in need of an overhaul after slipping to the bottom of the expanded Atlantic Coast Conference. The Hokies were 9-22 overall, 2-16 in the league, and fired coach James Johnson after two seasons with a 22-41 record.

Williams' relationship with the Marquette administration had grown strained in recent years, and sources said he did not like the reconfigured Big East.

Virginia Tech has not been to the NCAA tournament since 2007.
