Sources: Jazz claim forward Malcolm Thomas off waivers

The Utah Jazz claimed Malcolm Thomas off waivers, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

The San Antonio Spurs, who had guaranteed Thomas' contract for the season earlier this month, placed him on waivers Thursday. The Spurs needed a roster spot for a wing player, signing the D-League's Othyus Jeffers to a 10-day contract.

Jazz GM Dennis Lindsey has long been intrigued with Thomas, 25, and claiming him moves the Jazz roster to a full 15.

Thomas, a 6-foot-9 power forward, played mostly for the Spurs' D-League affiliate in Austin, averaging 15 points, nine rebounds and 2.4 blocks.

San Antonio had liked Thomas, but injuries to Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green forced them to create the roster spot.
