The Los Angeles Clippers plan to sign center Jeff Ayres from the Idaho Stampede of the NBA Development League to a 10-day contract after clearing a roster spot by trading Josh Smith, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Ayres will join the Clippers for their game Sunday against the Toronto Raptors.

The 6-foot-10 Ayres will give the Clippers depth in the frontcourt and some insurance as Blake Griffin nears his return from a quad injury.

The No. 31 overall pick in the 2009 NBA draft out of Arizona State, Ayres has played five seasons in the NBA with Portland, Indiana and San Antonio, and was on the Spurs’ championship team in 2014. Ayres, 28, has averaged three points and 2.8 rebounds in 10.1 minutes per game over his NBA career.

Ayres was the first pick in the D-League draft this season, averaging 16.3 points and 9.5 rebounds in 23 games for Idaho.

The Clippers sent Smith, cash and the draft rights to Sergei Lishouk to Houston on Friday for the rights to Maarty Leunen.
