SMU lands former Tennessee DE Mixon, former Texas A&M LB Moore
SMU is getting a couple of former SEC defensive players.
Former Tennessee defensive end Dimarya Mixon is transferring to the Mustangs and will be immediately eligible in 2017 as a graduate transfer. Former Texas A&M linebacker Richard Moore is also transferring to SMU, though he’ll have to sit out the 2017 season because of NCAA transfer rules.
Both players are Texas natives. Mixon, a former three-star recruit, played in 37 games over three years for the Volunteers. He had eight tackles and two sacks in 2016.
Moore had 39 tackles as a freshman in 2015 for the Aggies. He had 29 tackles in 11 games in 2016 and had one sack. From TheHillTopics.com, SMU’s Rivals site.
Moore is not the biggest outside linebacker, but what he does not have in size, he makes up for in speed, and awareness. Moore will be a good fit for the Mustangs, and there is a good chance he will be an defensive asset for the Mustangs in the 2018 season. This is a great pick up for the Mustangs.
The 2017 season will be SMU coach Chad Morris’ third with the team. After SMU was 1-11 the year before his arrival, Morris was 2-10 in 2015 and the Mustangs improved to 5-7 in 2016. With some added reinforcements on defense — SMU was 111th in the country in scoring defense in 2016 — SMU has a chance to go to its first bowl game since after the 2012 season pretty soon.
