Right-handed pitcher Brandon McCarthy has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right shoulder, the Oakland Athletics announced Sunday.
The move is retroactive to May 18, the day after his last start.
The A's replaced McCarthy on the roster by recalling right-hander Jim Miller.
McCarthy, who went on the DL for the seventh time in his career, has a 3-3 record with a 2.95 ERA in nine starts this season.
McCarthy made headlines during the May 17 start for his heated exchange with umpire Laz Diaz over a disputed double play call. Replays showed the umpire erred on the play, but McCarthy wrote in his personal blog that he regretted how he handled the disagreement.
Miller had a 0-2 record in Class AAA Sacramento with two saves and a 2.92 ERA in eight games. He had a 1.95 ERA in six games with the A's when he was called up last month.
