Sean Payton texted Drew Brees' wife to get QB to stop ziplining

NFL coaches might use the month of July to “relax” before the start of the season, but the quotes most certainly are needed for that word.

Especially as coaches and players approach the July 4 weekend with a mix of excitement and trepidation, and for many coaches the latter outweighs the former. Remember Jason Pierre-Paul’s fireworks accident? Coaches fear getting that call that one of their players has gotten into some trouble anytime, but certainly a few weeks before they report for training camp.

Consider the plight of New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton. There is he enjoying his downtime when he saw a July 2 tweet from his star quarterback, Drew Brees, showing a picture of him riding a homemade zipline, which started on the patio of his California house and led into a — get this — inflatable swimming pool in the backyard.

Payton naturally had to respond on Twitter when he saw it.

But the story doesn’t end there. He also was taking action behind the scenes.

Payton told NFL Network’s Rich Eisen this week that he made a plea for Brees to stop his zipline shenanigans, but instead of texting his QB directly, Payton immediately went through Brees’ wife. Smart man.

“Brittany sent me a text right away and said, ‘Tell me if you want me to make him stop.’ I’m like, ‘I want you to make him stop,'” Payton said.

We don’t believe Brees will be fashioning anymore homemade contraptions for entertainment before camp. At least Payton hopes he won’t be.
