SAN DIEGO -- After having its 11-game winning string snapped eight days ago, No. 19 San Diego State bounced back with a 72-57 non-conference victory over Cal State Bakersfield before an announced crowd of 12,414 at Viejas Arena on Wednesday night.
Guard Jamaal Franklin led the Aztecs with 18 points and 12 rebounds. He also had four assists and two blocks. Guard Chase Tapley added 14 points, 12 of those coming in the first half, on 6 of 12 shooting.
Guard Stephon Carter led the Roadrunners with 21 points and three steals, while forward Corey Hall finished with 14 points and nine rebounds. The pair combined to hit 14-of-26 field goals, but got little help from their teammates.
San Diego State hadn't played since falling 68-67 to No. 3 Arizona on Dec. 25 in the championship game of the Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii. It was the first time the Aztecs had lost since their season opener Nov. 11 to No. 7 Syracuse.
San Diego State (12-2), which never trailed against Cal State Bakersfield (6-11), built a double-digit lead by the middle of the first half and dominated.
The Aztecs coasted to a 37-20 halftime lead. They jumped on the Roadrunners early by connecting on four of their first six 3-pointers and 7 of 10 field goals.
After Xavier Thames sunk a 3-pointer, the Aztecs held a 21-12 lead with 11:59 remaining in the first half.
Cal State Bakersfield cut the lead to eight after guard Stephon Carter hit a free throw with 4:50 left before the Aztecs pushed the lead back to double digits again.
Tapley's 3-pointer just seconds before the halftime horn gave the Aztecs their biggest lead of the half. He led the Aztecs first-half scoring, going 5 of 8 on field-goal attempts for 12 points.
Guard Jamal Franklin finished with 11 in the half.
The Aztecs converted 11 of their 22 shots (50 percent) to only 8 of 25 (32 percent) for the Roadrunners. SDSU made 5 of 11 (45.5 percent) of its 3-point attempts compared to only 2 of 10 (20 percent) for Cal State Bakersfield.
