Ryan Mathews had a big day, but it wasn't enough to avoid a loss for the Chargers against the Dolphins, 20-16, in Miami Gardens.
Philip Rivers completed 22 of 34 passes for 298 yards, one touchdown and one pick. Ryan Tannehill ended up going 22 of 35 with 268 yards passing, one touchdown and one pick for the Dolphins.
Mathews was a standout player for the Chargers, rushing for 127 yards on 19 attempts and had two receptions for 16 yards. Antonio Gates was a top performer, snagging four passes for 52 yards while adding a touchdown.
The San Diego defense allowed 104 yards rushing and 268 passing. They manhandled Tannehill with four sacks.
Finally, Nick Novak was perfect, connecting on all three of his field goal attempts.
Dolphins tight end Charles Clay could not be contained, putting up 90 receiving yards and one touchdown. Running back Daniel Thomas also put together a noteworthy performance with 57 rushing yards and one touchdown.
The Chargers head to Kansas City next week to face the Chiefs (9-1) while the Dolphins host the Panthers (6-3).
