Johnny Dee scored 18 points to lead the San Diego Toreros to a 67-61 victory over the Morgan State Bears on Thursday at Hill Field House.
Dee, who scored his 1,000th point in the game, led four players in double figures for San Diego (3-0). Dennis Kramer had 12 points and seven rebounds. Christoper Anderson and Jito Kok scored 11 points apiece for the Toreros, who won despite shooting 44.3 percent from the field and 14.3 percent from 3-point range.
Justin Black scored a game-high 22 points for Morgan State (0-3). Black was the only player in double figures for the Bears, who shot just 38.3 percent from the field, made 5 of 21 3-point attempts and converted only 10 of 21 free throws.
The game remained close throughout the first half with a number of ties and lead changes. Anderson scored with 4:07 remaining in the period to put San Diego up 27-24, but Morgan State took a 33-30 lead into the locker room at the break after Anthony Hubbard made a layup with 1 second remaining.
The second half played out in similar fashion with the two teams exchanging leads. Blake Bozeman scored to put the Bears up 58-57 with 2:13 to go, but the Toreros outscored Morgan State 9-4 over the final 1:41.
