The New Orleans Saints will ask defensive end Will Smith and linebacker Jonathan Vilma to restructure their contracts, ESPN reported Monday, citing league sources.
Smith and Vilma were two of the more visible players of the Saints' 'Bountygate' scandal.
Smith is scheduled to make $10.15 million next season and Vilma is due $6 million. Vilma is entering the final year of his contract.
The Saints were reportedly about $13.5 million over the salary cap on Friday before linebacker Curtis Lofton restructured his deal. He will only cost the Saints $3.1 million toward the cap instead of $7.1 million. The Saints have until March 12 to get below the cap.
If Smith and Vilma are unwilling to restructure their contracts, the team could cut one or both of them to get the cap number down.
